For our Nostalgia Night on the 10th September 2016, the Plaza will proudly present the 1942 movie ‘Yankee Doodle Dandy’ starring James Cagney and Joan Leslie.
Cagney plays George M. Cohan who was a renowned musical composer, playwright, actor and singer.
James Cagney was born in Manhattan in 1899, he landed his first role as a chorus girl in drag, in a revue called ‘Pitta Patter’ but soon went on to be the big screens legionary tough guy and made a name for himself as a tough gangster in films such as “Angels with Dirty Faces’ and ‘White Heat’.
Although Cagney had no formal training as a dancer he moved well and learned quickly.
In ‘Yankee Doodle Dandy’, Cagney sheds his psychotic gangster persona giving a charming sentimental performance in which he sings and dances, captivating his audience. He won an Oscar for this performance.
The Plaza will also be presenting a full supporting program of nostalgic entertainment on 35mm, This is only the 2nd time we have used our original 35mm projector since we converted to digital in 2012. It is still in immaculate working condition bringing true movie magic.
